Faith-Based Engagement at COP 27

Faith Advocacy at the UNFCCC COP: From Glasgow to Sharm el-Sheikh

Ahead of COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland Faiths demonstrated the potential to engage in robust climate-related dialogue, opening world’s eyes to the potential of faith leaders and their institutions to bridge the gap between faith and science resulting in The Appeal.

This year, ahead of COP27 the UN called for inclusive spaces for civil society:

“They underscored the essential role civil society plays in advancing climate action and urged Egypt to ensure safe and meaningful participation at the conference, including for independent groups”.

– UN News, Egypt urged to ensure civil society’s full participation in COP27 climate summit

In spite of the presented challenges, faiths have ensured that their voices are heard by organising 40+ side events, meditations, interventions, and actions to raise ambition and raise awareness for our common home.

COP 27, Laudato Si and Advent

A delegation of the Laudato Si’ Movement will be present in Sharm el Sheikh and supported by the efforts of its members and partners, will focus on NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) and mitigation. They will also present the film The Letter.

Advent begins on November 27 and this year we will celebrate it with the theme “Preparing for the Good News”, with a weekly reflection that will be published on the Hozana platform, a community to unite in prayer as a Church. Join Hozana to pray together this Advent.

The Letter: Laudato Si Film Released Today

The Letter, the #laudatosi film, is out today. No coincidence that it is also the Feast of St Francis. Watch & listen to people from Senegal, the Amazon, India, and Hawaii as they articulate a radical vision for the protection of Creation.

In 2015, Pope Francis wrote Laudato Si’ (The Letter); an encyclical letter about the environmental crisis to every single person in the world. A few years later, four voices that have gone unheard in global conversations have been invited to an unprecedented dialogue with the Pope. Hailing from Senegal, the Amazon, India, and Hawaii, they bring perspective and solutions from the poor, the indigenous, the youth, and wildlife into a conversation with Pope Francis himself. This documentary follows their journey to Rome and the extraordinary experiences that took place there, and is packed with powerfully moving personal stories alongside the latest information about the planetary crisis and the toll it’s taking on nature and people. Because, in the words of the Laudato Si’ Movement chair Lorna Gold, “once you know, you CANNOT look away.” #LaudatoSiFilm

A Petition Calling for Strong Methane Rules in Oil and Gas

Dear President Biden,

We are running out of time to act on climate and protect public health. Thankfully, cutting methane pollution from oil and gas operations is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways we can slow the rate of climate change now, and keep our air clean and safe to breathe.

We were encouraged to learn that EPA has submitted a rule to the Office of Management and Budget to address methane and other harmful air pollution from new and existing oil and gas operations. We need your administration to publish the draft rule as soon as possible to protect our communities and climate.

Families are counting on a strong and comprehensive methane rule to address the gaps in last year’s proposed rule, including:

  • Requiring regular inspections at high-polluting small wells with leak-prone equipment and eliminating pollution from routine flaring, both of which are outsized sources of methane emissions;
  • Committing to community monitoring programs and working to incorporate data generated by community groups; and
  • Including a requirement to use equipment that does not emit pollution at well sites such as pneumatics.

Please ensure that strong methane rules are proposed as soon as possible to protect public health and climate, there is no time to waste.
