International Climate Congress Concludes with Dire, yet Hopeful Message
The International Scientific Congress, meeting on the theme Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions, concluded March 12 having drawn more than 2,500 delegates from nearly 80 countries. Preliminary messages from the Congress have been drafted by their Scientific Writing Team, as follows:
Climatic Trends: Observations confirm that the worst-case Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario trajectories are being realized. There is a significant risk that many of the trends will accelerate, leading to an increasing risk of abrupt or irreversible climatic shifts.
Social disruption: An increasing body of knowledge shows that societies are highly vulnerable to even modest levels of climate change, with poor nations and communities particularly at risk suggesting that expected temperature rises above 2C will be very difficult for contemporary societies to cope with.
Long-Term Strategy: Rapid, sustained, and effective mitigation based on coordinated global and regional action is required to avoid "dangerous climate change." Delay in initiating such action increases significantly the long-term social and economic costs.
Equity Dimensions: An effective, well-funded adaptation safety net is required for those people least capable of coping with climate change impacts.
Inaction is Inexcusable: There is no excuse for inaction because many tools and approaches to deal effectively with climate change are already available.
Entire highlights of the Climate Congress can be found at http://climatecongress.ku.dk/newsroom/congress_key_messages/ (Their final conclusions will be published in June 2009) To stay up-to-date on reports and activities leading up to the crucial United Nations Climate Conference in December this year, visit www.cop15.dk
