HCN Speaker Series: Fighting for a Fossil Fuel Free New Mexico

Join High Country News readers and friends for a thoughtful discussion about the impacts of fuel extraction in New Mexico and the fight for a fossil-free future. The conversation will be hosted by journalist Laura Paskus and feature community advocates and experts engaging in these struggles today.

The in-person event will take place at the The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104

Panel

Laura Paskus (host) is senior producer of “Our Land: New Mexico’s Environmental Past, Present and Future,” which airs on NMPBS. She is a former assistant editor of High Country News (2002-2006) and has worked in print, online, radio, and television covering New Mexico’s environmental issues. She’s also the author of the 2020 book, “At the Precipice: New Mexico’s Changing Climate.”

Samantha Ruscavage-Barz is Legal Director for WildEarth Guardians and has been with the organization for over a decade. She is responsible for coordinating the organization’s litigation strategies, managing and developing staff attorneys, and litigating cases that advance protections for air quality, the climate, public health, and the Rio Grande. Samantha is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law where she is also an Adjunct Professor.

Jonathon Alonzo (Policy Lead,  Youth United for Climate Crisis Action, YUCCA)

Kayley Shoup was born and raised in Carlsbad. She was spurred to action after noticing that she knew an abnormally high number of people with cancer diagnoses in her region—including her own mother. In 2020 she began working with Citizens Caring for the Future and continues to work with other concerned citizens, grassroots activists, and environmental stewards in the Permian and the state of New Mexico.
