Crude Intentions NM has come up with a clever website to illustrate the negative impact of the oil and gas industry on our frontline communities, cultural treasures and much more, all in the name of profit.

Oil and gas is big business for New Mexico, but it comes with an even bigger cost. Oil and gas production remains a burden for New Mexico’s land and its people. While Big Oil’s profits increase, New Mexico pays the price. The truth is pollution is at unacceptable levels in New Mexico wreaking havoc on our land, air, and our people.

Faith in Action: Reflections on the Permian Basin

Join the First Congregational Green Justice team  for a Zoom Forum on “Faith in Action: Reflections on the Permian Basin.”
Kayley Shoup, a Carlsbad resident and community activist with Citizens Caring for the Future. Kayley will share about the many challenges facing the region and how we can be a part of an intentional and just response.  Kayley’s presentation will be followed by reflections from Stephen Picha, Ann McCartney, Clara Sims, and Ruth Striegel who traveled to the Permian region in June in affiliation with New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light.
From the individual to the communal, we are all implicated in the sacrifice zones of our fossil fuel economy, particularly those imposed upon our neighbors to the south east. Join us as we reflect upon how we can further put our our faith into action for the well-being of the Permian region, our beloved state of New Mexico, and our one Earth home.

Critical Public Hearing at Valencia County Commission on July 14

In May, the Valencia County Commission approved an ordinance for a new Natural Resource Overlay Zone (NROZ). The NROZ ordinance sidesteps the Mineral Resource District (MRD) code that has been in effect since 2004.

The NROZ ordinance:

🛑     lacks many of the common-sense safety requirements that are written into the MRD code.

🛑     makes it very easy for an oil & gas company to come in and start drilling

🛑     was essentially written by a lawyer and Harvey Yates Jr., an ultra-wealthy oilman

🛑     was initially pushed through by the County Commission with no public input

Oil and Gas Drilling:

☠️     Puts our groundwater at risk of contamination

☠️    Puts our surface water at risk if there’s an oil spill

☠️     Puts our health at risk

🍼    More premature babies

⚰️    Decreased life expectancy

🧪    Toxic chemicals found in air, water and urine samples

☠️     Increases violent crime

☠️     Puts agricultural community in jeopardy

☠️     Litters the land with pump jacks and drilling equipment

Why put a new ordinance in place that makes it extremely easy for an Oil & Gas company to start drilling in Valencia County?

Why put a new ordinance in place that provides far fewer protections than the existing ordinances provide for our community?

Why sacrifice our community for someone else’s profit?
