Protect your national parks from oil and gas drilling

August 22, 2023 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Ninety percent of BLM lands are open to oil and gas extraction, threatening your national parks. The BLM could change that for the better.

Our parks and public lands provide crucial wildlife habitat, hold sacred and sensitive cultural resources, and supply communities with clean water. Leaving so much of our public lands open to oil and gas development is reckless; it directly contradicts essential emissions reduction targets and conservation goals set forth by the Biden administration.

Speak Out!

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is considering commonsense updates to protect public lands from oil and gas drilling, which for too long has plagued our national parks and surrounding landscapes. As part of their process, the BLM is hosting a public meeting in Albuquerque on Tuesday, August 22 to share information about their proposal and take public comment.

Through BLM’s proposal, we have the opportunity to steer development away from our parks and their surrounding landscapes by directing BLM to avoid crucial wildlife habitat and sensitive cultural resources, reduce the threat of future orphan and abandoned wells by increasing bonding requirements, and align leasing decisions with national emission reduction goals and build towards the development of a climate plan for our public lands. Now is the time for action.

Please plan to attend this public meeting. We need to show there is widespread support for a more balanced approach to public lands management.
